I like this Zen koan because it reminds me to resist my urge toward rigid rules and expectations, instead to be right “on the edge of the sword,” awake enough each moment to do what is needed when it is needed. Well, that's the goal, anyway. I'm trying to stay present even in the midst of fear, which seems so often to be with me.

About nine months ago, I made a decision to lay down my corporate fishing rod and follow an organization called the Network of Spiritual Progressives to Berkeley, CA, in the capacity of national organizer. It was one of those experiences that made sense of everything that had come before–all those years of writing, reading, thinking, and obsessing about love, meaning, and politics. Much of my energy now goes to building this movement for a new bottom line based on love, kindness, generosity, connection to others and to the universe.

When I'm not doing that, though, I'm reading, drinking in the sun and beautiful Bay-area weather, seeing Indie films or going to theater, and spending time with friends.
